Abdominal Pain

Abdominal discomfort can be acute or chronic and can be caused by issues relating to the stomach, appendix, gallbladder, spleen, bowel, liver, gynecological issues, or other issues. Constipation

If you have difficulty moving your bowels you may be suffering from constipation. Constipation is when a person either moves their bowels infrequently, less than once every 3 days or must strain when passing stool. Persistent constipation should always be evaluated with a thorough consultation and examination by a physician for an accurate diagnosis and constipation treatment plan and to exclude a serious illness or condition.

Gastritis

Gastritis is a term used to describe inflammation and injury to the cells lining the stomach and can have many causes. Gastritis can be caused by a bacterium in the stomach called Helicobacter pylori. This is a common stomach bacterium leading to a stomach infection called h. Pylori gastritis can be a cause of stomach ulcers. When we find h. pylori bacteria as the cause of gastritis during endoscopy, or via breath or stool test, h. Pylori treatment is prescribed which is in the form of antibiotics.

GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, referred to as GERD, is a condition in which the acidic juices in your stomach splash back into your esophagus (“acid reflux”), irritating the esophageal lining. This burning sensation is also called heartburn. Persistent heartburn symptoms can lead to Barrett’s esophagus which is a precursor to esophageal cancer. Our Gastroenterologists and GERD specialists at our offices commonly evaluate and treat this condition.

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is a medical condition diagnosed by our gastroenterologist that damages the lining of your small intestine. If you have celiac disease, eating gluten — a protein found in wheat, oats, rye, and barley - triggers an immune response that irritates your small intestine. Over time, the irritation causes inflammation. As a result, your body cannot absorb certain nutrients. Gluten intolerance is when there is an adverse reaction to gluten and causes symptoms, but it does not cause damage to the intestines.

Upper Endoscopy

Upper endoscopy (EGD or endoscopy) is a non-surgical procedure performed by our endoscopy doctors that is used to examine a person’s upper digestive tract. An endoscope is a flexible tube with a light and camera attached at the end which allows your doctor to view pictures of your upper digestive tract on a screen.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is the gold standard screening exam used to look for colorectal cancer (commonly referred to as colon cancer) that is recommended in patients without symptoms aged 45 or over (or earlier depending on risk factors such as family history, polyps, and other factors) that should be discussed with your local gastroenterologist.

Breath Test

A hydrogen breath test is a test that uses the measurement of hydrogen in the breath to diagnose several conditions that cause gastrointestinal symptoms.

Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule endoscopy sheds light on the middle regions of the gastrointestinal tract without exploratory surgery. Swallowing the tiny camera can reveal the source of gastrointestinal bleeding, detect bowel inflammation from Crohn’s disease, find tumors and see ulcers.
